Background of the Study

Cooperative farming has been recognized as a critical pathway for improving agricultural productivity, ensuring food security, and enhancing rural livelihoods. In Jega Local Government Area, Kebbi State, small-scale farmers face challenges such as inadequate access to resources, limited market opportunities, and lack of technical knowledge. Communication strategies play an essential role in promoting cooperative farming by fostering collaboration, disseminating agricultural information, and enhancing farmer participation in decision-making processes (Yusuf & Abubakar, 2023). Through tools such as community radio programs, agricultural extension services, and farmer-focused campaigns, communication can bridge knowledge gaps and encourage the adoption of cooperative practices, ultimately driving sustainable agricultural development.

1.2 Statement of the Problem

Despite its potential benefits, cooperative farming is underutilized in Jega LGA due to poor awareness, weak farmer networks, and insufficient communication initiatives. Many farmers lack access to timely and relevant information about the advantages of cooperative models, leading to low participation rates and fragmented agricultural practices (Ibrahim & Bello, 2024). This study assesses the effectiveness of existing communication strategies in promoting cooperative farming and identifies opportunities for improvement to enhance agricultural productivity and farmer collaboration in Jega LGA.

1.3 Objectives of the Study

  1. To evaluate the effectiveness of communication strategies in promoting cooperative farming in Jega LGA.

  2. To identify challenges in implementing communication initiatives for cooperative farming.

  3. To assess the impact of participatory communication on farmer collaboration and productivity.

1.4 Research Questions

  1. How effective are communication strategies in promoting cooperative farming in Jega LGA?

  2. What challenges affect the implementation of communication initiatives for cooperative farming?

  3. What is the impact of participatory communication on farmer collaboration and productivity?

1.5 Research Hypotheses

  1. Communication strategies significantly promote cooperative farming in Jega LGA.

  2. Challenges such as limited access to information hinder the adoption of cooperative farming practices.

  3. Participatory communication positively impacts farmer collaboration and productivity.

1.6 Significance of the Study

This study emphasizes the role of effective communication in advancing cooperative farming, offering insights into strategies that can enhance farmer participation and collaboration. The findings provide valuable guidance for agricultural policymakers, extension workers, and development organizations to design communication initiatives that address the needs of small-scale farmers. By promoting cooperative farming, the study contributes to sustainable agricultural development and improved livelihoods in Jega LGA.

1.7 Scope and Limitations of the Study

The study focuses on Jega Local Government Area, Kebbi State, assessing communication strategies for promoting cooperative farming among small-scale farmers.
